Open Days

A Euro café, interactive science displays, musical interludes, drama performances and sport demonstrations are just some of the activities on offer at the Plymouth College Open Morning on Saturday 4 October. The independent school will open its doors at the Senior School at Ford Park from 9.30 a.m. to12.30 p.m. Visitors will have the chance to look around the school and meet staff and pupils.

Founded in 1877, Plymouth College is a city-based day and boarding school providing education for boys and girls aged 3 to 18. A forward-looking school with a successful history, this summer saw a good set of results at both A Level and GCSE - on average Plymouth College pupils perform one grade better in each GCSE taken than predicted by previous attainment. A number of students achieve about two grades higher than expected in each subject. The school also offers the International Baccalaureate in the Sixth Form, which achieved an outstanding overall point score of 28.7, the equivalent of more than 3 As at A Level.

Business and Economics is a particular strength with pupils from the school gaining the top mark in the country in GCSE, A Level and DipFS on a number of occasions. Plymouth College also leads the way in national business competitions, having won eleven in the last decade. It is now a Young Enterprise Centre of Excellence and is launching an Entrepreneurial Society.

The school is equally proud of its enriching extra-curricular programme, with activities ranging from sports and outward bound to music and drama. The school production of 'The Greatest Show on Earth' was energetic and fun, while the new Year 7s have been enjoying overnight stays at Whiteworks on Dartmoor. On the sports front, the school caters for all abilities but it is particularly proud of its elite athlete programme which saw 16 representations at 7 international events this summer including the Commonwealth Games, the European Swimming Championships and the World Youth Olympics.

The school boasts a mix of cultures with pupils from the Far East, Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Locally, pupils come fromPlymouth, the South Hams,West Devonand South East Cornwall, many using the school bus service.

Headmaster, Dr Simon Wormleighton, says: "Our academic curriculum is strong but we also believe firmly in the importance of the wider curriculum, which is reflected in the diverse mix of sporting, outward bound, artistic, musical and dramatic activities. Everyone is able to find success and enjoyment along a broad front.

"There is a great community spirit at the College and those who come here make lasting friendships and forge good relationships at all levels."
