The Board of Governors is delighted to announce that Jonathan Cohen has been appointed as the next Headmaster of Plymouth College.
Jonathan is currently Deputy Head at Brentwood School in Essex and he previously worked at Haileybury College in Hertfordshire and King’s Bruton in Somerset. Prior to entering teaching he enjoyed a successful career in investment banking, working for Lehman Brothers and later UBS. Jonathan has a keen interest in sport, particularly rugby, football, hockey and cricket, having played and coached extensively. His other interests include politics and international affairs, the performing arts and, of course, education. He holds a Masters degree in Educational Leadership and is soon to complete his Doctorate in Education. He will be joined in Plymouth by his wife Clare, currently a boarding housemistress and teacher of Chemistry, and their three children, Charlie, Eleanor and Josephine.
David Woodgate, Chairman of Governors said: “We are delighted to have appointed Jonathan to the post of Headmaster, in which he will have strategic oversight of both the Senior School and the Prep School. Jonathan was appointed from a very strong field of experienced Heads and Deputy Heads. He brings considerable educational experience to the role as well as commercial and business acumen. He outlined many innovative ideas to develop our educational offering (particularly in STEM subjects), to support wellbeing, pastoral care and staff development and to pursue excellence. Jonathan’s values resonate strongly with those of the College and he will lead the school with vigour and vision in the next phase of our development.”
Of his appointment Jonathan said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been appointed as the next Headmaster of Plymouth College, a prestigious, progressive school I have admired for so long. I look forward to building on the outstanding leadership of Jonathan Standen and working with the whole community at the College at what is such an exciting stage of its development. From my first visit, I have been deeply impressed by both the warmth of everyone I have met as well as their absolute commitment to enabling every pupil to fulfil their academic potential whilst developing into happy and successful adults. My wife and I are very much looking forward to joining the Plymouth College family and getting to know all the staff, pupils and parents in the months and years ahead.”
Jonathan takes up his post in April 2019, succeeding Jonathan Standen who becomes Headmaster of Harrow International School Bangkok. David Woodgate said: “We wish Jonathan and his wife Suzie every success and happiness in their next venture. Jonathan Standen has provided excellent leadership for Plymouth College, laying sound foundations for Jonathan Cohen to build upon.”
