Former Plymouth College pupil and Olympic 100 metres breaststroke gold medallist, Ruta Meilutyte, has announced her retirement from swimming at the age of 22.
We are very proud of her sporting achievements but also at the courageous way in which Ruta is prioritising her mental and emotional wellbeing. She is an amazing role model to young people in both respects.
Ruta trained and studied at Plymouth College with Plymouth Leander when she won 100m breaststroke gold in 2012 at the age of 15. While still at school she also achieved medals at the Youth Olympic Games, World Championships, World Junior Championships, European Championships, European Junior Championships and European Youth Olympic Festival.
Jonathan Cohen, Headmaster, said: “We wish Ruta the best of luck in her future endeavours and support her during this time. Plymouth College continues to educate, enrich and empower every one of our pupils. Our strong partnership with Plymouth Leander enables us to provide a swimming programme that offers unparalleled coaching, a first-class academic education and outstanding pastoral care for our pupils.”
