Plymouth College celebrated the Chinese New Year ‘Year of the Monkey’ with a colourful and lively procession around the school site.
The centre piece of the procession was a giant monkey, made from willow and tissue-paper. The monkey and a variety of smaller lanterns, with good luck messages in Chinese, were made during boarders’ Saturday activities and at afterschool art club. The procession was accompanied by the Samba Band.
Earlier in the day students and staff enjoyed a Chinese lunch, which included sweet and sour chicken, pork with pineapple and stir fry beef with noodles, rice and prawn crackers on the side.
“As ever the procession was a great event,” said art teacher, Dana Roberts. “We have been sampling the use of different coloured tissue paper this year, which made the lantern ensemble brighter and more vibrant than ever.”
