Plymouth College celebrated the Chinese ‘Year of the Goat’ with a colourful and lively procession around the school site. Students carried a giant goat made from willow and tissue-paper, and a variety of red lanterns with good luck messages in Chinese. The procession was supported by the Samba Band led by Dr Christian Taylor, with Mayson Tam playing the Chinese Drum.
The willow goat started as a Saturday boarding activity with Iona, Lillian, Terry, Tuvshintu, Max, Louisa and Vitaly building the main structure. The tissue paper skin and text was added during Friday afternoon art activity by Nina, Louisa and Natasha.
The school also celebrated Chinese New Year with a Chinese lunch and a celebration assembly. Rosie and Jocelyn played a piano duet; Harry, Katie and Maya performed The story of the Chinese New Year; Dr Taylor, Mayson and the Samba Band played Chinese beats while Moon Dance was sung by George (vocals), Gabriel (drums), Tom (bass) and Mr Green (piano).
“It was a very successful celebration,” said art teacher and Chinese New Year organiser, Dana Roberts. “The Samba Band sounded wonderful and the goat looked fantastic!”
