Ben Andrews became a Commonwealth silver medallist at the Commonwealth Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Representing England in the Men’s U17 Individual Epee Squad, Ben travelled to Newcastle to compete in the championships which are held every three years. Getting a bye into the top 32 after his pool fights, Ben was ranked 15th going into the direct elimination rounds. In his first knockout round Ben won 15-3 against New Zealand’s Peter Fish before knocking out the number one seed, Jamaica’s Tariq Roach, 15-7 in the top 16.
Another confident performance saw a 15-5 victory over Scotland’s Issac McKerr to put Ben in a medal position. The semi-final produced a 15-9 win over Riley Xian of Canada before Ben went on to take silver in the final against Rajendran Shanthimol Sherjin of India.
Congratulations to Ben for this fantastic achievement and good luck for the team event on Thursday!
