On a chilly Wednesday afternoon, little did the folk of Plymouth realise that a World Cup final was taking place right on their doorstep!
I speak, of course, of the tournament we have created to enable our players to remain at the top of their game despite all of the COVID restrictions in place.
The 2020 Plymouth College Senior Hockey World Cup took place over 3 weeks with players selected to represent one of the 4 competing nations. The 4 members of the Senior Hockey Leadership group took on the role of captain and had the aim of leading their side to World Cup glory.
The competition saw Belgium, Germany, Ireland and New Zealand competing to become (Plymouth College) World Champions. It started with the group stages which would see teams play each other twice, and final positions would determine the semi-final line ups.
As well as competing for the World Cup trophy, there were also the usual player awards to be claimed - Top Goalscorer (Golden Stick), GK with fewest goals conceded (Golden Kicker) and the Player of the Tournament (voted for by all of the players).
With the group stages over, 1st placed Belgium took on Ireland in one Semi Final with Germany taking on New Zealand in the other game. Three weeks of intense competition came to an exciting end with Belgium being crowned Champions. Germany GK Alice Patterson won the Golden Kicker award with captain Ella Robinson sharing the Golden Stick award with Belgium forward Grace Hockin. The Player of the Tournament award, as voted for by the players was tied between Beth Scott (Germany) and Ruby McKinley (Ireland).
Thanks to the officials. Mr Mutlow and Miss Tremaine for making the games run so well and thanks of course must go to all the players who made the event such a success.
