Following outstanding A Level results last week, the pupils of Plymouth College continued to demonstrate academic excellence with another set of superb GCSE results today. Pupils sat a combination of GCSEs and IGCSEs, receiving a mix of numerical and alphabetical grades, with 93% of students achieving A*- C (9-4) grades in five or more subjects. Over a quarter accomplished more than five 7s and above (A*/A grades), a fantastic achievement.
Amongst today’s results, there were some notable performances by pupils that have embraced the holistic and balanced nature of Plymouth College. Zoe Lancaster, a talented pianist, secured nine 9 grades and two A*s. Ciara Bartlett, who is pursuing an international basketball career, achieved nine 8s or above. Annabel Denton, a GB U19 Pentathlete who had a very successful summer winning two bronze medals at the Youth World Pentathlon Championships, secured seven 8s or above and two 7s or equivalent. Our swimming stars also excelled outside of the pool with Louis Edwards-Pratt achieving 7s, 8s or 9s from his nine subjects and Miraal Haque, who swims internationally for Pakistan, achieving nine 8s and 9s and an A. Honey Osrin, who is presently representing Team GB at the World Junior Championships in Budapest following her medal success at the European Juniors earlier this summer, also gained eight GCSEs alongside her gruelling training schedule.
The success of our international boarders in also testament their hard work and our supportive boarding environment. Jennifer Liu from Beijing achieved eight A*s or As or equivalent with Alireza Maleki from Iran achieving five A*s or equivalent after having been at the school for only 18 months.
Of course, success looks different for everyone and at Plymouth College we encourage and support all pupils to exceed their potential. For Abigail Williams, this is about the journey that led her here – “before joining Plymouth College in Year 9, I didn’t enjoy school at all, but being in smaller classes with teachers that cared about me and my individual needs has really turned it around. I did better than I imagined I ever could, and am heading to study Biology, Chemistry and English Literature in the sixth form. I’m hoping to then go on to Nottingham University to study Criminology”.
Jonathan Cohen, Headmaster, said: “Plymouth College continues to demonstrate its academic excellence and I’m thrilled to see all our pupils excelling in their exams. At Plymouth College we strive to educate, enrich and empower every single one of our pupils and today’s results, alongside performance in the value-added league tables, demonstrates our commitment to providing educational excellence both in and out of the classroom. As our wonderful Upper Sixth pupils head off to leading universities in a few weeks’ time, I’m very much looking forward to welcoming our amazing year 11s back in September, alongside the many new pupils joining the school, for the next chapter of their journey with us.”
