This week, our in-school extracurricular activities and after-school clubs have been in full swing. We have seen a plethora of activities from sports to music to academic enrichment...
Sports
In sports, we have seen team sports including rugby, football and netball all come back with a bang! It's been great to see pupils back on the court and the field and use their skills in team-work and agility to not only excel as an individual sportsperson and as Team Plymouth College.
What is also great about having our team sports available is that pupils are able to break up their academic study with a high-energy activity that allows them to focus on something completely different, which is very beneficial for their health and well-being.
Academic and Enrichment
In academic and enrichment activities, we have had an array of after-school clubs and activities taking part during the week.
This week saw the start of the Sixth Form Law Society at Plymouth College. The aim of the Law society is to both develop certain skills of Plymouth College pupils, such as debating skills, analysis and the application of key information to problems, but also to expose them to the world of Law.
The members of the Law society will spend some sessions looking at legal theory, legislation and case law, before then applying this to mock cases and debating the outcomes themselves. This will help to develop those aforementioned skills, but also give them some experience of what it is like to study Law at university. They will also have the benefit of visits (via Google Meet) from people in the industry itself, who can give the pupils valuables insights into applying for Law, and also, tell them what it is like to work as a lawyer. This combines to mean pupils will broaden their educational horizons, enrich their knowledge of the legal world, both as a subject at university and in the workplace, and empower them to debate issues and make a more informed decision about the pursuit of a legal career.
We have also seen our extra-curricular activities in music take off this week and it has been so good to get back to live music after the summer of Zoom!
Nearly 40 students took part in our three "bubble" choirs this week - and I was really struck by how many good new voices have joined us.
Our orchestra, spaced out to keep the bubbles distanced, started rehearsing numbers from "My Fair Lady". While it was strange having violins at the front and back and trumpets, flutes and cellos in the middle, the students showed really good reading and teamwork skills as they got to grips with it. Our quotable moment was when Mr Hiscock said "At figure B, after a 16 bar rest, the trumpet is going enter with the stealth of a stalking panther"... and he did!
Thanks to everyone for their support in getting music up running again!
