Plymouth College, in association with Plymouth Albion RFC, is offering a scholarship to a talented sixth form rugby player from the south west.  The successful player will have the opportunity to develop his rugby-playing career while at the same time be able to benefit from the wide range of academic, sporting and cultural opportunities available at the co-educational independent day and boarding school.

The first-class rugby programme at Plymouth College sees players taking part in a range of high-quality fixtures both locally and further a field, receiving intensive skills-based and fitness-orientated training programmes, and participating in major national tournaments and overseas tours which has seen the team travel to South Africa, South America and Australia in recent years - the next proposed tour will be to South Africa and Namibia in 2010.

As well as the opportunities on offer by being part of this established and highly-regarded team, the successful rugby scholar will also benefit from a mentoring programme with staff from Plymouth Albion RFC.  Graham Dawe, Chairman of Rugby at Plymouth Albion RFC said: “We at Albion will help by providing position-specific mentoring, advice and unit skills training”.

The Plymouth College 1st XV remain unbeaten so far this season with victories over Kelly College (51-13), Queen’s Taunton (40-12), Exeter School (14-3) and Bodmin College in the Daily Mail Cup (22-0) to name but a few.

Head of Rugby, Richard Edwards, said: “The launch of the rugby scholarship is a really exciting development for Plymouth College and means we can build on an already excellent, long-standing rugby tradition. “We hope that this scholarship will provide a talented youngster with the opportunity to complete their sixth form education in a diverse and challenging environment, while at the same time enabling them to fulfil their potential as a rugby player.”

Applications are welcome from eligible students with a proven playing background and suitable academic credentials to be successful in sixth form life at the school.  In the first instance, all applicants should contact Mrs Sharon Lambie, Headmaster’s Secretary, on 01752 203245 or [email protected] for a prospectus and details of the application process. An outline of rugby-playing experience, achievements and why they feel they would be the right person to come to Plymouth College will be beneficial from all applicants.
