
Plymouth won the 2009 tournament with a clean sweep of victories in the pool section before overcoming the challenge of Torquay Grammar in the final. The British weather did its best to confound the organisers by delivering a severe frost in the morning followed by persistent heavy rain after that. However, Kelly bravely staged the event and amid the difficult conditions some entertaining rugby was produced for the collection of hardy supporters.
In the pool stages, Plymouth beat Tavistock College and a Barbarian side (formed last minute due to the late withdrawal of North Devon), before coming up against their Devon Cup Final opponents, Exeter School, in the deciding match of the pool. Plymouth made it three wins out of three against their nearest rivals of this season, after an assertive defensive effort denied Exeter space or opportunity. The result of 15-0 ensured that
Plymouth went through to the final where both sides battled hard against each other, fatigue and the elements. Plymouth came through on top again, finishing with a record of played four, won four. In the final analysis, the fact that Plymouth did not have a point scored against them during the tournament highlights the collective unity of this team, and their organisation in defence meant that their own try line was rarely threatened.
Captain Phil Beak and Vice Captain Alex Parford were again able to share the joy of winning silverware with their team mates, following the win in the Under 18 Devon Cup final in December.
