
Within weeks of clinching the Plymouth title, Platform the Plymouth College Young Enterprise company, has won the Devon competition.
The product, 'Railtrails', is a book of walks designed to support patronage on the rural branch lines of First Great Western. The team members researched, designed and published the book themselves and have had 2000 copies printed. To date the book can be purchased on Amazon, both branches of Waterstones in Plymouth and Plymouth Tourist Information. Their most famous customer is actor and travel documentarian, Michael Palin.
Platform have agreed an 'in principle' deal with Tormark to distribute the book to National Trust properties and branches of Asda and Tesco around Devon and Cornwall. 'Railtrails' will also be on sale on Saturday 9 June on the Plymouth College stand (377 grid ref C1) at the Royal Cornwall Show.
In the Devon round of the competition Platform won three out of the four trophies - best company report, best trade stand and best overall company in Devon. Held at the Met Office in Exeter, the other schools taking part were Colyton Grammar School, Exeter School, Kelly College and Exmouth Community College. Platform, who are working on a German version of the book, now progress to the South West championships in Bristol on Monday 25 June.
Plymouth College has a strong track record in business competitions - the school has won 11 national titles in recent years including the National Young Enterprise in 2009. Business and Economics pupils have also achieved the top mark in the country at GCSE, A level and DipFS on a number of occasions.
