Plymouth College pupil, Emily Ackford, 16, stormed her way to 8th place in the London Mini Marathon on Sunday. Competing against 270 other girls in the U17 category, Emily completed the 3-mile course in 16 minutes and 55 seconds.
The first home for the South West, her gritty run clinched the team second place out of 9 regions from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. The race also included teams from all 33 London boroughs.
Emily went into the race on top form having won the Devon County, the Devon Schools and the South West Schools Cross Country Championships this season. She trains with City of Plymouth AC.
The Mini Marathon runs from Billingsgate to the Mall and involves male and female athletes in U17, U15 and U13 age categories. Past winners include Mo Farah, who won the boys' race three times, and wheelchair stars David Weir and Shelly Woods. Many other successful athletes also started their careers in this event.
