In April 2015, Plymouth College sixth former Robbie Lockyer, 18, ran the London Marathon in an impressive time of 3.13:25. This was his first marathon along the crowded streets of London and followed months of training along Cornish roads in winter conditions whilst also studying for his A Levels.
What makes his achievement even more outstanding is his fundraising effort for The Banana Tree Project. With all the funds now in, Robbie raised over £1500 for underprivileged children in Tanzania, which equates to over three and a half million Tanzanian shillings. These funds now go directly to supporting former street kids and orphans through their secondary education at local schools in Mwanza, Tanzania.
BTP Director and Head of Sixth Form, Ed Beavington, highlighted Robbie's contribution: "For every mile that Robbie ran he funded street kids and orphans into school. When Yuseph, one of the sponsored boys, wrote to Robbie to thank him for his efforts, he was thanking him for giving Yuseph the opportunity to go to school. Robbie's is a wonderful achievement with a lasting legacy."
