Sixth Form pupils engaged in a lively lunch time debate, deliberating whether ‘TNCs (transnational corporations) contribute positively to dimensions of globalisation’. Upper Sixth pupils opened the debate, presenting a positive argument as to why TNCs contribute positively to dimensions of globalisation. One of the main points raised was the increase in wages for local people employed by TNCs compared to those employed by local companies. The Lower Sixth argued against, introducing the fact that TNCs outsource in order to lower costs, meaning that local people are paid much lower wages and work longer hours compared to workers in other countries. After much debating themselves, the judges came to the decision that the Upper Sixth pupils were the winners, due to their tenacity and ability to formulate very fast responses to the Lower Sixth pupil’s points.
