Plymouth College swimming sensation, Ruta Meilutyte, 15, can add 'World Champion' to her Olympic title after winning the 50m breaststroke in the World Short Course Swimming Championships.
Ruta proved her Olympic triumph in the 100m breaststroke was not just a one-off when she won the prelims and the semi-final in Istanbul and broke the championship record. In the final, Ruta held off a strong field to finish in 29.44, breaking the record for a second time.
Not long afterwards Ruta won her semi-final in the 100m IM and starts her campaign in the 100m breaststroke today.
Ruta is part of the unique and highly-successful Plymouth College/Plymouth Leander elite swimming programme, which provides flexible academic support and extensive pastoral care alongside first-rate swimming coaching.
"This is another fantastic result for Ruta", said Plymouth College Headmaster, Dr Simon Wormleighton. "She is absolutely thriving in these big competitions and it is such a delight to see her become World Champion. The whole Plymouth College community is very proud of her."
