Year 7 pupils at Plymouth College have been working with The Banana Tree Project to sponsor an orphaned boy in Tanzania. Steven Mautula is 14 years old and has spent time living on the streets of Mwanza in Tanzania. He is now able to go to school as a direct result of the fundraising efforts.

The pupils have raised £738 by organising and taking part in sponsored runs, cycles, swims and silences amongst many other efforts.  The money funds Steven's tuition fees, exam fees, school uniform & shoes, school meals and boarding expenses, as well as his stationery and textbooks. A special mention must go to Jack Robertson, 12, for his amazing marathon bike ride.

The Banana Tree Project was set up by Ed Beavington, Plymouth College's Head of History, to help orphans and street children in Mwanza go to school. The touring 1st XI cricketers have presented a cheque for £180 to the BTP recently.  This will go a very long way to helping underprivileged children go to school. Further information about the charity can be found at www.bananatreeproject.org.
