Upper Sixth pupil, Tom Little, tells us about his time in Costa Rica this summer…
"The most inspiring five weeks of my life were spent this summer in the jungle of Costa Rica volunteering for Raleigh International. This charity aims to drive sustainable development through inspiring young people to be the agents of change. I was working alongside Tortuguero National Park Rangers in wildlife conservation and engaging in activities with local schools, which raised my awareness of the importance of balancing the economic needs of marginalised rural communities with protecting critically endangered species.
It was a fantastic opportunity to live and work closely with local people, sharing each other's culture, tradition and language. Living conditions were tough though and during our tenure the Cuatro Esquinas Ranger Station flooded twice, caused by the increased frequency and severity of the el nino effect triggering abnormally torrential rain.
We lived in wildcamps, trekking, carrying, cooking, permanently soaking, living in an intense social environment with a team 24/7. It was physically gruelling at times, required mental resilience and a positive, proactive approach to the hard conditions. It was fantastic to be so involved. I made friends for life and my eyes were opened to the real need to promote sustainability."
