Plymouth College pupils were involved in all sorts of science enrichment activities, both in school and beyond, as part of the school’s Festival of Science.
During the three-day event, Year 7 went on a trip to London, where they visited the Science Museum, the Centre of the Cell, the Wellcome Collection and the Royal Observatory at Greenwich. In the evenings, they had a ride on the London Eye and a spooky tour of haunted London.
Year 8 had a mixture of activities, including a forensics day with the Chemistry department, then a rotation of rockets, egg-engineering and an inflatable planetarium, followed on the last day by a behind-the-scenes visit to the National Marine Aquarium.
Year 9 had the challenge of designing an investigation for an American-style science fair, and they worked hard to really pull it off in style, with some fantastic, colourful displays on show in the MK Hall on the Friday afternoon.
Year 10 had a great first day using some police forensic techniques to solve four mysterious murders in the Sixth Form Centre (staged of course!). They also contributed to the OPAL “citizen science” biodiversity project run by Imperial College by collecting data on various biodiversity issues. On the third day, the IT and computing department ran an activity where the students were able to write code to produce an app, on a topic of their choice, which they could then download onto their phones.
“It was a fantastic three days full of enriching activities,” said Head of Science, Phil Grey. “The students worked hard to produce some really positive outcomes.”
