A team of young scientists from Plymouth College have come second in the regional final of the Top of the Bench Chemistry Competition.
Held at Exeter University, Ben Gittins (Year 11), Jocelyn Wannell (Year 10), Lucy Armitage (Year 9) and Tom Biggs (Year 9) had to complete a variety of practical tasks, including a comparison of indigestion remedies - a titration and the identification of seven substances by precipitation reactions.
This was followed by a chemical quiz, which challenged their knowledge on a range of topics from the structure of buckminsterfullerene to simple gas tests.
Ten schools took part in the competition, which was won by Thomas Hardye School, Dorset.
