Former Australian Test cricket player, Damien Martyn, has visited Plymouth College to say hello to some of the school's budding players.
Damien, who retired from cricket in 2010, has been in the UK to take part in a charity match organised by Shane Warne and Liz Hurley. Now a businessman and cricket commentator, he returns to the UK in a few weeks to help commentate on the Ashes for the BBC.
In his career, Damien took part in 67 Tests scoring 4406 runs and 208 ODIs scoring 5346 runs. He was primarily a right-handed middle-order batsman with a 'classical' technique, known in particular for his elegant stroke-making square of the wicket on the off-side and through the covers. Damien was also an occasional medium pace bowler and outstanding cover fielder who was capable of creating spectacular run outs. He was named man of the series in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2004, to help Australia defeat India on the subcontinent for the first time in more than 30 years, and was named in early 2005 as the Australian Test player of the Year at the annual Allan Border Medal presentations.
During his visit to Plymouth College he watched the U13s play and talked to some of the older players about their development tour to Sri Lanka next month.
"It was fantastic to meet Damien," said Plymouth College Head of Cricket, Jon Mears. "He was great with the boys and took time to chat to them and pose for photographs. It was a particular boost to the U13s to have him watch them play."
