Olympic champion and Plymouth College swimmer, Ruta Meilutyte, 16, has had another phenomenal summer, breaking two world records and claiming senior and junior world titles.
At the senior World Championships in Barcelona, the Lithuanian swimmer broke both the 100m breaststroke (1.04.35) and the 50m breaststroke (29.48) records in the semi-finals. She went on to take gold in the 100m and silver in the 50m finals. Interestingly, the 100m breaststroke world title was won exactly a year to the day that Ruta won gold in the same event in London 2012. She is the youngest swimmer in history to take both titles in the space of 12 months.
Currently competing at the Junior World Championships in Dubai, Ruta has won four gold medals and two silver medals. The golds came in the 100m and 50m breaststroke, the 200m individual medley and the 50m freestyle, with silver medals in the 100m freestyle and the 100m mixed medley relay.
Plymouth College Director of Swimming, Jon Rudd, said: "We went to Barcelona with a plan to challenge the world records. The preparation she had was close to perfect and it clearly paid off!
"Ruta totally deserves everything she gets - every record, every medal - because of the commitment and the sacrifice she makes to excel in this sport. It's great to be part of that."
