Plymouth College was the most successful school in the regional round of the Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Speaking Competition held in Barnstaple. The school's students won a third of the awards on offer including half of the prizes for non-native speakers.
Victoria Vincent, 13, won KS3 talking in German about her family using home-made dolls. In the KS4 category, Claire Tinmanee, 14, came first speaking in Spanish about her holiday. Mae Dartnell, 17, spoke about wearing the veil in France to come second in the KS5 category while Luc Dewulf, 17, was runner up in the KS5 near native category - his French powerpoint presentation about where water comes from included a chemical experiment!
Part of the Routes into Languages initiative, the competition was contested by 75 pupils from schools across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. The four Plymouth College students follow in the footsteps of former pupil and world diver, Tom Daley, who won the KS5 category last year. They proceed to the national finals in Bath in June.
"I am delighted that we have done so well," said Plymouth College's Head of French and Spanish, Philip Randall. "The level of competition was very high and that makes the success even more rewarding. To be the school with the most awards is the icing on the cake."
Plymouth College's regional finalists were selected for the competition after success in the school's in-house MFL speaking event.
