In honour of International Women's Day, our sixth form pupils from the Plymouth College UNs Society, organised their very first debate to discuss 'Is the feminist movement necessary?'.
The debate chaired by Saul Auty, raised some strong questions 'Why are the upper echelons of industry and economy predominantly male?'
'What in Modern day Western Society is the main focus of feminist movements?'
'Do females in the western world already have equality?'
It seems that both sides of the debate believed women should have equality, that 1st and 2nd wave feminism enabled law changes, which benefited women in this western world. However, there is a great disparity between rights for women outside of the western world and those within it. The 3rd wave of feminism which we are currently seeing in western society needs to see now; social views change at a grass roots level.
A great well researched and discussed debate from key speakers Chloe Campbell-Hamilton, John Alao and Philip Habib.
With thanks to Saul Auty (Chair), Harris Tzokas (Tresurer) and Fred Aniyi (Secretary).
