This week we've had a creative and practical week up at the Senior School. Take a look at what we got up to...
DT
Year 7 have been making their torches and had a lesson on using the pillar drill
Year 10 have been using the laser cutter to create their stool tops for a model stool inspired by the iconic designer Alvar Aalto
Sixth form have been developing their projects and practicing sampling techniques. A L6th student did some laser etching onto denim
Year 13 have been practicing their 3D sketching ready to use for their model development
Maths
Last week two of our sixth formers studying A level further maths, Naomi and Ellie, took part in the Mathematical Olympiad for Girls. This is a high level competition run by the UK Mathematical Trust (the organisation that runs the Junior, Intermediate and Senior maths challenges that many of our students take part in annually). This competition is aimed at girls and young women across the UK and consists of five challenging problems.
The solutions require logical thought and the ability to look at a problem from a variety of different angles. The problems do not usually involve a lot of “taught” mathematics but test insight and mathematical understanding.
The top scorers from around the country are encouraged to start preparing for the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 which feeds in to the training and selection of the team to represent the UK at the prestigious International Mathematical Olympiad, the annual Olympic games of mathematics, and other international competitions. For anyone who is interested, further information can be found at ukmt.org.uk.
Here's an example of one of the questions our A level students were given:
We're extremely proud of all students who took part!
Science
We've had an exciting time in Biology this week! Our Year 10s had an insightful lesson investigating the nutrients in food and our A-level biologists made serial dilutions to find the concentration of an unknown sample. Our student in South Africa even joined in during remote learning!
