In their five-week enrichment project a group of Upper Sixth students were given a brief to create a new shower gel brand for a 5 star boutique hotel.

One group had Exeter and it was an Art Hotel catering for cultured and creative people, the other group had Newquay and a more outdoors clientele. Both groups then had to put together a customer profile and a new brand of shower gel including the fragrance and bottle design.

They created a mood board and a power point presentation to get the feel of their product across for a pitch to the hotel owners. They also had a 'smelling panel' where they selected a fragrance for their shower from 10 fine fragrances in which they were introduced to odour language and the composition of high-end fragrances. In all, apart from actually formulating the fragrance themselves, the task replicated what many big companies in the aroma trades (like Proctor and Gamble Fine Fragrances or Cussons) do when creating new products and present them to potential customers.

Teacher-in-charge of the project, Ali Green, said: “They were all amazing, bringing different skills to the task; some were very business-minded and focussed on the branding research, whereas others demonstrated immense creativity in the visual and conceptual aspects of the task.”
