Plymouth College has hosted a second In2Medcine conference. The brainchild of OPM Ryan Hext and presented in conjunction with Tim Bray (also an OPM), the event is aimed at potential medics to help them prepare for their chosen degree courses.
Ryan and Tim, helped by doctors and current medical students from the area, covered a variety of key topics including personal statements, the interview process, the UKCAT and life as a medical student. In the afternoon there were a number of practical demonstrations including taking blood and resuscitating a patient.
The event was open to potential medics from across the South West as well as Plymouth College students on the Pre-Med programme.
Designed for students studying A Levels or the International Baccalaureate Diploma, Plymouth College’s Pre-Med programme offers Sixth Form students extended knowledge and skills that will help them in the whole medical school application process. As well as attending events like In2Medicine, the course includes seminars with medical professionals on latest advances and thinking; practical work experience; a course in medical terminology; coaching in confidence and interpersonal skills and the opportunity for independent reading and research.
Plymouth College Oxbridge Co-ordinator, Dan Martin, said: “This excellent conference showcased another example of the great range of support available for our early applicants whether preparing for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Oxford or Cambridge. We look forward to hosting In2Medicine again in the future.”
