After weeks of postponement due to bad weather, Year 6 pupils at Plymouth College Preparatory School have raced the cars they made in Design Technology.
Using wood for the frame and mdf for the outer shell, the children had to solder electronic components together to build the car motors. They then decorated their cars, resulting in some unusual designs such as an ice cream, bumble bee and a dog.
Design and Technology teacher, Richard Palmer, who is also Head of Year 7 at the Senior School, gave prizes for the most attractive design as well as for the fastest car. Most attractive car prizes went to Megan Bishop, Teddy Haffenden and Beth Scott. Race winners were 1st Eloise Wills, 2nd William Mills and 3rd Barnaby Mills.
“Year 6 have been so excited about racing their cars so it’s brilliant that we have had a warm sunny day at last,” said Richard.
“I was so impressed that they produced such a wide range of original and creative ideas. Some emphasised speed, with a low profile making them really aerodynamic, while others concentrated on standout design. The project has given the children a great foundation in designing in readiness for Key Stage 4.”
